The crater is what remains of a mountain that collapsed into itself roughly two and a half million years ago. The walls are 610 metres of forest and grass; the floor is 260 square kilometres of open plain, swamp, soda lake and yellow-bark acacia. Because the animals have no reason to leave, the density is like nowhere else on the circuit — and because everything is contained, a morning here reads as a complete ecosystem rather than a series of sightings.

The rules matter. Vehicles are permitted six hours on the floor and the descent road opens at six. We are down early, which is the difference between watching a lioness hunt and watching twenty vehicles watch a lioness sleep. Bring a fleece: the rim sits at over 2,200 metres and the dawn drive is genuinely cold.

Ngorongoro is a conservation area rather than a national park, which means Maasai families still live and graze inside it. You will pass cattle on the crater rim. That coexistence is unusual and worth understanding rather than photographing from a distance.

How to get there

By road — about 3 hours from Arusha, or 4 from Tarangire. Every northern-circuit itinerary passes through it.
By air — Lake Manyara airstrip is the nearest, then about 90 minutes by road up the escarpment.

The crater floor

Two hundred and sixty square kilometres of grass, swamp and soda lake, holding around 25,000 large animals that mostly never leave. The descent road opens at six and vehicles get six hours.

Lake Magadi

The shallow soda lake on the floor. Flamingo numbers rise and fall with the water, and the hippo pool beside it is one of the few places you are allowed out of the vehicle.

Olduvai Gorge

On the road out towards the Serengeti. The Leakeys found some of the oldest hominin remains anywhere here; the small museum on the rim is worth the hour.

Empakaai and Olmoti

Two quieter craters north of the main one, both walkable with a ranger. Empakaai has a flamingo lake at the bottom and a view to Ol Doinyo Lengai.

Activities

Crater descent

Down at first light with a packed breakfast. The first two hours are worth more than the last four, and we plan the day around that.

Maasai village visit

Arranged directly with a family we know rather than at the roadside stops, and paid to them. Optional, and only if you actually want it.

Highland walking

Guided walks on the rim and down into Empakaai with an armed ranger — the part of the conservation area almost nobody sees.

Olduvai and the Shifting Sands

The gorge museum and a black volcanic dune that moves west a few metres every year. An easy add-on when you are driving to the Serengeti.
