Kilimanjaro — The Lemosho Route in Eight Days

Duration 8 days
Group Private or group
Pace Active
Best season January – mid-March, and June – October

Lemosho approaches from the west, crosses the Shira Plateau, and joins the southern circuit at Barranco. It is the quietest start on the mountain and it has the best acclimatisation profile of the standard routes — you climb high and sleep low three times before summit night.

We run it over eight days rather than seven. The extra night is at Karanga, and it is the single cheapest thing you can buy on this mountain in terms of what it does to your chances.

An honest note

Nothing on this route is technical. Altitude is the whole difficulty, and it does not care how fit you are. If you ask us for the five-day Marangu route we will talk you out of it, because we would rather lose the booking than take you up a mountain you are unlikely to summit.

The itinerary

Met at Kilimanjaro International and driven to Moshi. Full kit check in the afternoon — we would rather find the missing layer tonight than at 4,600 metres.

Overnight: Hotel in Moshi Meals: D

Drive round to the western side and walk three or four hours through rainforest to the first camp. Colobus overhead, and almost nobody else on the trail.

Overnight: Mti Mkubwa camp, 2,780 m Meals: B, L, D

Out of the forest and up onto the moorland, with the first proper view of the summit. Six hours or so, and the day the mountain stops being an idea.

Overnight: Shira 1 camp, 3,505 m Meals: B, L, D

A gentler day across the plateau to Shira 2, with an afternoon walk higher and back down to sleep. This is the first proper climb-high-sleep-low day.

Overnight: Shira 2 camp, 3,900 m Meals: B, L, D

Up to 4,600 metres at the Lava Tower for lunch, then down 600 metres to Barranco. You will feel the altitude at the top and better by the evening — which is exactly the point.

Overnight: Barranco camp, 3,960 m Meals: B, L, D

The wall looks impossible from the camp and turns out to be a scramble with your hands in. A short day to Karanga, deliberately, to bank another night at altitude.

Overnight: Karanga camp, 3,995 m Meals: B, L, D

Three or four hours across alpine desert to base camp. An early dinner and bed by seven, because you are getting up at eleven.

Overnight: Barafu camp, 4,673 m Meals: B, L, D

Leave around midnight for Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak at sunrise. Back down to Barafu for a rest and a meal, then on to Mweka for the last night on the mountain.

Overnight: Mweka camp, 3,100 m Meals: B, L, D

Common questions

Fit enough to walk five to seven hours a day on consecutive days. Long hill walks at home are the best preparation. Marathon fitness is not required and does not protect you from altitude.

Higher on eight days than seven, and much higher than on five. We will not quote you a percentage, because every operator quotes one and none of them are audited.

Yes, and the order matters — mountain first, safari afterwards. You want the safari as the reward, not the warm-up, and you do not want a summit attempt on legs that have already done one.

Paid at or above the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project guidelines, with weighed loads and proper sleeping tents. Ask us for the numbers and we will send them.
